The plains of Andalucía are well-known for providing a backdrop to spaghetti Westerns – with a little Hollywood magic, you could swear you heard the call of a coyote in that sprawling Spanish desert. For more than a decade, this ethereal landscape was also the backdrop for singer Amy Scott-Samuel’s adult life. Now flitting between her hometown of Liverpool and her adopted home of Andalucía, she has fed off these transient moments of connection and beauty, pushing past the artifice and isolation of the daily grind.

 

One theme that has stayed constant across her work, whether rehearsing in a friend’s living room in Liverpool or roaming the cliffs of southern Spain, is a feeling of expansiveness and drama, the hidden inner conflicts that tower in the mind. Scott-Samuel is a big believer in separating herself from the noise of the city, allowing herself time to identify with nature and experiencing the scenery as a kind of conduit for her emotions.

 

Though the songs on her forthcoming debut album Go Gently might have come from an introspective place, Scott-Samuel hopes that they strike a chord with strangers, particularly anyone who might be looking for a shred of hope on a dark day. ​
